Instead of studying for a class or for an upcoming exam, most of the youth are out with their friends for a late night party and other gatherings. Parents should be strict when it comes to the education and future of their children. They should guide their children until such point when their child can already stand on their own or be independent. Values and discipline must always be taught to their children that way their child will become responsible in the future.

And since there is no halt to crimes and other forms of violence, parents should always remain as protector to their children and keep them free from any harm. Having bad influence friends can be the reason why almost half of the teens become criminals or addicts at a very young age. With this, you need to make sure that your child gets to learn self defense techniques that way he will not become a victim of crimes and violence made by other teenagers. There are already non lethal self defense weapons such as the tazer stun gun but since they are still very young, they still cannot possess one.

Enrolling your child to a self defense school is really very beneficial for him or her. Not only will they get numerous health benefits but they will also be able to learn techniques and develop values. There are plenty of self defense techniques that he can choose to learn. One of the most popular forms of self defense technique among the young is Taekwondo.

Taekwondo aims to make the students discipline, to learn to coordinate speed and power, and to develop concentration when faced in a dangerous situation. Most of the Taekwondo instructors expect their students to have the willingness to try. Even the adults as late as 65 years old still gets to earn a black belt. Surely it would not be at all difficult for the young ones to achieve such high rank.

Aside from developing concentration, speed and discipline, Taekwondo also aims to allow the students most especially women to emphasize many of her physical strengths. They can use the power of the arms and legs when they are under attack. All the techniques developed from learning Taekwondo is used against the soft and vulnerable parts of an attacker’s body. Once you your kids will learn all of the basics, it is now easy for them to learn all the other techniques.

With Taekwondo, your kids will not only learn how to defend himself during times of trouble but he will also learn to become responsible and be well disciplined. They will behave properly when they are at school or in any other social gatherings. Learning self defense techniques is really very helpful to them especially when they still do not have the right to carry a tazer gun. They will surely have fun and learn a lot of great things when they learn Taekwondo.

In Kung Fu and T’ai Chi we have found that the training you commit to in martial arts causes some incredible things to happen. You start to realize just how tough you are, inside and out. Your increase in strength, speed, balance, agility and mental focus begin to make you more confident, more daring, more willing to go after the things in life that you really want! The act of taking rank advancement tests, a physical test that most people do not have to experience ever, in front of an instructor or panel of black belts, while frightening, results in someone who says to themselves, “I did that, I can definitely do that other thing I was afraid to try (like applying for a promotion or new job, leaving a bad relationship, or embracing a new one).

Martial Arts do burn a LOT of calories. And you do become a great fighter in kung fu. And few people know this, but T’ai Chi is a martial art too and those who study it are some of the best fighters of all! But you probably won’t need fighting skills too often in your life, so why else then would this Chinese martial art have been around for so very long? Because it goes far deeper than fighting. And if you are looking for something in your life that will motivate you, challenge you and help you reach your highest potential, you might want to consider what the many Austin martial artists have discovered at Shaolin-Do, to quote JFK’s speech regarding our early goals of space travel, We do these things “not because they are easy, but because they are hard. Because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.”

Mixed martial arts fights contain four basic ranges of fighting. These four ranges are punching, kicking, clinching, and on the ground. A good MMA school will offer classes and training that cover those ranges. Look for a MMA school that offers Muay Thai Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, submission grappling, Greco Roman and freestyle wrestling, and boxing. In order to compete in the MMA competitions, you’ll need to be trained in those disciplines as well as in combinations.

When you choose a mixed martial arts school, think ahead of time what your ultimate learning goals are. Are you interested in competing in “no rules” MMA competitions? Are you interested in specializing in one discipline? Are you not interested in competing, but are more focused on learning the skills and learning about yourself?

When you look at a school’s curriculum and you talk to the instructors, ask specific questions about how you can achieve your goals. If you want to learn mixed martial arts but not compete outside the school, get a sense of whether or not that is going to be an acceptable goal for you at that school. If you are uncomfortable with the expectations of the training at a school for any reason, voice your concerns to the director or to an instructor and listen carefully to his answer. If he hears your concerns and reassures you that you’ll be able to meet your goals, that might be the school for you. If he insists on pushing you into something where you don’t feel comfortable, that’s probably not the place for you to sign up.

Learning MMA can do great things for your body. Often, people are looking for something to do for exercise that isn’t the same old, same old. MMA can energize your workout time by creating a new routine. It can invigorate your mind by learning new skills and new ways of thinking and moving. Mixed martial arts can be a challenge both mentally and physically. Many people find it a rewarding way to meet their daily or weekly exercise goals and don’t compete on any significant level.

Many people are surprised to find that they enjoy the atmosphere of a MMA school. These schools have an atmosphere of mutual respect where the teachers and students go out of their way to respect each other. Students often find a sense of community in the MMA school that they don’t find in traditional gyms or on sports teams. That sense of belonging and community can be a powerful force in someone’s life and is just one of the benefits of joining a martial arts school.

Studying mixed martial arts is a great way to get in shape, learn traditional martial arts disciplines, and to discover new things about yourself.

Starting with Muay Thai, you will have to know how it is the heritage of the Thai people and they are very proud of it. It is hard to explain the history of these people without looking at how Muay Thai played a role in it. This is because they have had to defend themselves for centuries against other nations that would come in and try to take over the country. You might be surprised to know that they are a gentle people and are very fun loving…just make sure that you don’t cross them or else you might be in a whole world of hurt.

Many of the Thai men have come to learn this martial art as a rite of passage. Since the terrain there is a bit rough they had to learn how to fight in close combat. This is where the history of the sport came to be. They created it to be able to fight in the rough terrain of the country.

It is a very dangerous sport and can be brutal on both fighters. However, since it has become more modernized, there have been many new rules concerning fighter safety; such as wearing gloves. Before these rules, there had been just about no protection of any sort when they were fighting.

Go to Thailand, if you want to learn and train in Muay Thai. There is a professional MMA fighters who can give you the best fighting skills.

There are many different styles of Kung Fu practiced today, but one of the most popular taught in martial arts schools today is ‘Choy-Li-Fut’.

This style combines hard techniques with speed, balance and power. The Choy-Li-Fut style includes numerous hand and weapons techniques, more than one hundred actually exist in this style.

Many schools teach this martial art as a full contact style, and some of the most advanced martial artists practice this style due to its realism, so beware.

To succeed in Choy-Li-Fut you need to be strong and flexible, it is almost worth saying that you should not be a total novice to martial arts to attempt Kung Fu either, it helps to have some form of grounding. The Choy-Li-Fut martial artist’s arm is supposed to act like a rope i.e loose and flexible, whilst the hand is meant to act like a rock, solid and strong.

Four basic punching techniques are taught; the straight punch, the back fist, the uppercut and the roundhouse. There are also many elbow strikes, knee strikes and grappling techniques which are used. There are even advanced techniques to teach you to strike pressure points on your opponent to immobilise them, this is often only reserved though for intermediate students.

Weapons are used such as the staff, spear, broadsword, double-edged sword, knives and many more. So if you are the kind of martial artist who likes your weapons then Choy-Li-Fut may well be for you.

When you have decided that you wish to start a martial arts group, it is a good idea to check out clubs first before you join up. Try observing a class in session, see if there is enough space available for everyone to perform their routines effectively. Having cramped quarters can make for a very frustrating experience. Find out how many students attend the sessions and what the average class size is.

There are a lot of schools that teach everyone well even with large student to teacher ratios, you will get more attention in a club that has a smaller student to teacher ratio. More than ten to fifteen students per instructor can be awkward. If the club you are observing has assistant instructors then this is also a good sign.

A smaller club will mean that you will get more individual attention, which means that you will master routines and learn new skills at a quicker pace. The downside is that a smaller club may be to small to support the instructor, if he has a day job then the day job may interfere with the instructors ability to teach well. You have to take a step back and ask yourself as to why the school is so small. Could it be that the teacher is a bad teacher, or annoys all of the members? You have to think of these different questions when checking out the club that is most suitable for you, on the other had the teacher may be keeping the class smaller to produce some extremely talented martial artists.

With a larger club or school you have the opportunity to work with a different variety of people from various walks of life that have different skill levels, thus contributing to your overall success as a martial artist. It is good to try and get the opportunity to help teach as well.

You have the ability to train where ever you have access to an internet connection. You can train at home, the workplace, inside your hotel room, and other places. Look at the subject matter as often as you want, stop it, and view it again. No more boring DVDs – you get fresh content each week.

Price is another reason a number of people want to practice at home. Traditional martial arts programs can run up to $150 per month for one family member. Imagine the cost for a family of four! Online programs average about $25 per month for the whole family. It will save you not simply time, it will save you cash on the lessons, and gas money driving both to and from class. For the cost, you just can’t beat an online program.

Class schedules are another significant advantage of working out at home. You can train when it works for your lifestyle. There aren’t any set class times you are required to attend, your choices are wide open. If you feel like working out a little longer you could start the video over and keep going. If something comes up and you have got to cut your training short, you have the capability to do this too.

The only real disadvantage to internet based training is that you simply don’t have a trainer right next to you replying to your questions. In regards to training online, your questions are answered by email, unless you are in a live class online. Yes, with all the advancements in technology, home study programs are now offering live class options.

Among the best methods to determine if a web-based martial arts program meets your needs is to give it a try. Most programs include a 60 day money back guarantee so you can test drive the course. You are also able to sign up for free videos, to get a better feel for the teacher, the style, and also the techniques.

Learning this kind of art is half the battle; practicing it is something that takes a lifetime of commitment and dedication.

What Is Kung Fu?

Most people think of “kung fu” as “Chinese martial arts,” although the term “wushu” more properly applies to the physical aspects of this kind of sport. It combines centuries of Oriental martial arts traditions with ancient Chinese philosophy. It may involve combat with or without weapons, although it is more often practiced as an exercise or for meditation.

Principles of Kung Fu

Kung fu is a very complex system of beliefs, but the basics can be covered by three guiding principles:

* Chi. Also known as qi, chi is the life-force found in every human being. It is an energy that flows through nature. It was developed to maximize the ability of a person to concentrate and use chi to go beyond the limits of the mind and body.

* Virtues. In kung fu, wisdom (deed) and emotions (mind) should always be in harmony with each other. The mind must be guided with courage, endurance, perseverance, patience, and force of will. Kung fu also teaches a person values like loyalty, righteousness, humility, politeness, and trust.

* Combat/wushu. Some people see fighting as the most important part of kung fu, but it is only part of it. Wushu is often used a self-defense technique, although it can also be used as a form of exercise. Wushu is a very rigorous physical activity that requires peak physical conditioning, strength, and flexibility to push your body to the limits.

Kung Fu Schools

Kung fu schools are different from dojos. You may end up enrolling at a karate dojo, and end up learning karate instead of kung fu. When choosing a kung fu school, choose one that offers Chinese martial arts programs, and has a reputation for good students. Like any other school, a good kung fu school or martial arts academy builds its reputation based on the skills of its students. Kung fu schools, like karate and judo dojos, have different programs for different skills and levels of physical conditioning. If the master of the school finds that you have developed and mastered your skills, he or she may promote you to the next level.

There are more tae kwon do gyms in the world. People look at it as the most friendly and well-disciplined martial arts.

But the more important aspects of this sport are not so much in the punches nor the kicks or the putting an enemy down. However, the more important aspects of these martial arts are the discipline and the character that develops though the wholesome trainings in the gym. With daily practice, discipline and an ability to stick to a focus are than any awards or medal won during tournaments. The lengthy hours of practice, of physical routine trains your body to adopt and adjust and to sustain. These enable your attitude to stick to your goal and to allow your mental faculties to accommodate the task at hand.

If you notice today, more and more parents are bringing their teen age children to tae kwon do gyms. They don’t intend to have their children beaten in each fight but rather to develop confidence and character that copies that of a true champion. One parent said of his 14 year old son, “I want him to be enrolled in a tae kwon do class more than I would find him in front of the computer.” This mother understood the value of discipline and character formation through actual experience. Interestingly, those that are involved in proper martial arts trainings in the gym are less likely to engage in street-like bouts. They have become more responsible of the skills they have learned and keep their tempers down than those who do not.

Psychologists also found an interesting correlation between developing strength through proper training and success in the workplace. In other words, yuppies who enrolled in martial arts training program when they were young are likely to seriously carry out job descriptions and can tolerate more pressure in their respective jobs than those who spend their extra times in the home doing nothing or doing other non-sport oriented activities.

The art of tae kwon do is not only for the strong and mighty. For young men and women, Korean masters teach them to translate their weaknesses into strengths to ensure victory against the opponent.

If you are new to the world of boxing, here are some tips you need to learn to enjoy this sport.

Boxing is a strenuous activity that requires a lot of stamina and endurance. Before entering to the stage, make sure to go to a doctor and have your self examined. The doctor will assess and perform important procedures to know whether you are physically fit and capable of entering to the boxing sport.

Upon the doctor’s approval, get your boxing gear and equipments ready. You are required to have a good pair of boxing gloves, hand wraps, a mouth piece, head protector, and appropriate shoes. These are all necessary to protect yourself from serious injury.

Find a good boxing facility with good trainers. The gym should consist of a boxing ring, mirrors, different punching bags and other gym equipments. This will help you get trained with different exercises and workouts. This may range from treadmills, a couple of jump ropes and rounds of punches. All routine exercises are consulted and should be recommended by a reputable trainer.

The basic element in boxing is to learn how to throw a good jab. A jab is not just throwing powerful punches to your opponent. It is an art that you need to learn. You can learn and master the technique of jabbing through constant practice.

A second key point to learn is foot and leg work. It is important for you to learn proper foot work and body mechanics. In order to stay in the fight or sparring, you need to have a well guarded foot that will balance your entire body. This will help you to throw an effective jab while maintaining a defensive and strong posture.

Work on the speed and heavy bags inside the training facility. Working on the heavy bag will gradually help you improve your strength and coordination. On the other hand, working with speed bags will basically improve your speed, hand- eye coordination and movement. Working with the speed bag on your first few attempts is quite frustrating. Keep on practicing and eventually, you’ll find yourself mastering the speed bag.

If you’ve been trained for boxing basics, you may need to have a sparring partner to practice with. Your partner should be of the same level as you are to protect yourself to get intimidated. You’ll never know how boxing truly feels not unless you tried it on the ring with your partner.
